Cannot complete Defend the Scientists/Engineers

Got to the room with the engineers. The “Defend” icon came up, but no enemies ever came after several minutes, so had to quit mission. Note that I spent time beforehand exploring the outside area (took the zip lines up and down), and eliminated all the enemies inside the building before going to the engineers’ room.
